Tips to Make your home look “expensive”.

For me, luxury and creating a room that looks expensive is all in the details, and in particular in the details of textiles.  Labor for custom pillows, bedding and window treatments is usually not going to break the bank - the driving cost is usually the fabric you select.  A high end look is easy to achieve with more expensive fabrics, but even if you don’t have the budget for let’s say a Shumacher, or a Pierre Frey, that is still ok.   It’s all in the details of how you combine the fabrics, and trims, and the attention to the custom components that elevates them beyond ordinary. Here are a few tips that can really make your home look well designed and thoroughly luxurious.

Add Trim

If you are re-upholsterying a sofa, think about adding trim in an unexpected area, like the seat cushion, or a big chunky bullion fringe on the skirt.  It can even be as simple as a contrast welt that can make an ordinary sofa feel more special.  In this photo you can see how the trim on the sofa and the piping on the pillows, gives this area an elevated look that feels more luxurious then if these items weren’t finished with trim.

Custom Embroidery

When considering other ways to elevate your textiles, think of customizing them with embroidery.  You can use a plain (fairly inexpensive fabric) and by adding a custom embroidery, it makes that pillow, or chair, or whatever you choose feel so much more expensive.

This dining room chair was already stunning but by designing and adding the custom monogram, it took the room to the next level.

That attention to detail really doesn’t cost that much more.  It just takes a little more thought and intention.  But adding custom soft goods with layers of different details really makes a room much more plush and so much more expensive looking!
