Pillow Power

Pillows make a giant impact on your room and because of this you want to pay special attention to them when you are designing. Here are some tips of the trade to make those accessories pop.

Splurg on Fabric

Pillows don’t require a ton of fabric so take this opportunity to splurge on some beautiful textiles. Your budget may not allow for your favorite Pierre Frey fabric on the entire sofa but you can purchase a couple yards to create pillows and get a big bang for your buck. It’s also the opportunity to bring in color, pattern and texture that you may be too nervous to do on a large surface - a pillow makes a perfect canvas for these designs!

 Dress Up Your Pillow

Make sure you dress up your pillow. You may be asking, “what do you mean Kim, it’s a pillow”.  But I’m not kidding, dress that puppy up!  Something as simple as a 1/2” flat flange with a fan detail around the corners or contrast piping or additional trim… all these things dress up a pillow and up-levels your pillow game!  I love to add those extra details and customize each pillow I design.

Don’t Forget About the Inserts

Don’t forget to buy quality inserts. You want your pillows to have a plushness to them that poly-fill inserts just don’t provide - you don’t want to spend all that money on beautiful fabric and flange, just to have you pillow look less then sophisticated.  I recommend using a down insert or a faux down and make sure your inserts fill the pillow cover completely; you don’t want to have any floppy-corners.  Depending on the pillow, I sometimes purchase the next size up insert so that all four corners are full.

So have fun with those designs and don’t be scared to do something out of the ordinary. Pillows are a great way to give your room a personality and pizazz so just remember those three tips above and you’ll end up with something special.
